Understanding the California Board of Parole Hearings (BPH)

The California Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) is the state agency responsible for conducting parole suitability hearings and non-violent offender reviews for inmates serving time in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. This includes individuals who have been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole and those eligible under various legislative mandates, such as Elder Parole and Youth Parole.

The Board is composed of 21 Commissioners who are appointed by the Governor. Their role is crucial in assessing whether inmates have demonstrated rehabilitation and are suitable for parole, balancing the need for public safety with the rights of individuals who have served their sentences.

Understanding the BPH's processes is essential for victims, advocates, and communities, as parole decisions can significantly impact victims' rights and community safety. For more information about the Board of Parole Hearings, visit their official website
